Maria Montessori

Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was a renowned Italian physician, educator, and pedagogue, known for developing the educational method that bears her name, the Montessori method. Born in Italy, she was one of the first women to obtain a medical degree in 1896. She showed a keen interest in the education of children with special needs and worked with mentally challenged children.

In 1907, Montessori opened her first school, Casa dei Bambini, in Rome, where she experimented with her innovative educational method. The Montessori method emphasizes self-education, sensory learning, and the encouragement of independence in children. Her approach spread worldwide and significantly influenced the field of education.

Maria Montessori continued to develop and promote her method throughout her life. In 1929, she founded the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) to support and disseminate her educational philosophy. Montessori also wrote several books on education, including “The Child” and “The Discovery of the Child,” which are still widely read and studied in the field of education. Her legacy endures, and the Montessori method is used in schools worldwide.
